In the H2020 inLane project, as in Escape (concluded in 2019), IFSTTAR’s work focused on the performance evaluation of GNSS-based systems, combining satellite positioning with other exteroceptive measurements, such as camera vision, LiDAR, radar, and proprioceptive sensors: wheel odometry (via encoders) and onboard inertial navigation systems.

The variety of coupled technologies, particularly radiofrequency, photometric, and especially inertial sensors, makes full-scale experimental evaluation almost unavoidable and significantly complicates—or even limits—the ability to evaluate these systems through simulation alone.

Standardized tests, which ensure, for example, the precise and safe localization of automated vehicles, still raise many open questions.

A summary of the inLane work, including performance evaluation and standardization aspects, was presented by David Bétaille (SII) at Barcelona on June 19, 2018, and at the ITS World Conference in Copenhagen on September 17, 2018.
